The Nele is a gaffed two-master that measures 28m long, weighs 90 tonnes, features 185 sq m of sails and is equipped with a 235hp "auxiliary motor", two auxiliary generators and a bow screw. As for the exterior, the ship is a replica of the Oostende two-mast smack, the type of vessel used by the fishermen of Oostende in the 19th century to fish the coastal waters. This replica was built in the traditional manner but nevertheless features all modern conveniences. The permanent crew comprises a master, an engineer and a sailor.
